一、課程特色及目標:

(1)課程特色:

  • Introduction to Mechanical Engineering for the freshman in engineering college.
  • This class is taught in English.
  • This is a distance learning course.
  • Provide a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment that encourages aptitude of independent learning.

 

(2)課程目標:

This course is intended for students who are in the first year of a typical college program in mechanical engineering. Throughout the following lectures, students will lean technical problem-solving skills, design, engineering analysis, and modern technology. The lecture begins with a narrative description of mechanical engineers, what they do, and the impact they can have (Chapter 1). Seven elements of mechanical engineering are emphasized subsequently in Chapter 2 (Mechanical Design), Chapter 3 (Professional Practice), Chapter 4 (Forces in Structures and Machines), Chapter 5 (Materials and Stresses), Chapter 6 (Fluids Engineering), Chapter 7 ( Thermal and Energy Systems), and Chapter 8 (Motion and Power Transmission). The objectives of this course include: 

  • Introduction to the mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Providing a system of knowledge of who mechanical engineers are, what they do, and what technical, social, and environmental challenges they solve with the technologies.

           Upon the completion of this course, students are expected to:

  • Have a broad range of knowledge of mechanical engineering discipline, who mechanical engineers are, and what they do.
  • Be able to define major mechanical engineering discipline terminology in English.
  • Understand some principles of mechanical engineering technology and challenges.
  • Identify major elements of mechanical engineering discipline in English.

          Correctly utilize a variety of technical terminology needed to communicate in a mechanical engineering environment.
